General FAQ's

That depends on what you want to experience during your adventure!

The lodge opens the first week of June, when guests can chase hungry rainbows, char, and grayling. King salmon begin showing up around this time as well, and the days grow longer with warming temperatures.

July is when Alaska truly comes alive. Sockeye salmon begin their migration, drawing bears down from higher elevations in anticipation of the feast. Eagles become more active, wildflowers bloom, and the landscape is at its peak. July 31st is the final day of King salmon fishing.

August and September are prime months for fly-outs to target trophy rainbow trout or chase silver salmon on the Naknek River. Wild rainbows gorge on sockeye roe and flesh after the spawn, creating opportunities to hook the trout of a lifetime.

If bear viewing is your priority, don’t worry—where the salmon are, the bears will be too. August and September offer exceptional bear viewing with stunning fall colors and fat, healthy bears, making for true National Geographic-worthy photos.

In addition to world-class fishing on the Naknek River and a wide variety of fly-out options, guests can enjoy:

  • Bear viewing at the legendary Brooks Falls
  • Floating remote rivers within Katmai National Park & Preserve
  • Scenic flightseeing tours of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes
  • Guided river wildlife tours through Katmai
  • Tours of the town of Naknek, including the world’s largest salmon canneries and the shores of Bristol Bay
  • On-property activities including walking trails, skeet shooting, tundra mini-golf, lodge games, life sized Jenga, S'mores bar and more

The lodge opens the first week of June, with the river opening on June 8th, and typically operates through October 1st.

Our all-inclusive guided fishing packages include everything except your fishing license, alcohol, and gratuities. Included in your stay:

  • Lodging
  • All meals
  • Professional guide service on the Naknek River
  • All fishing equipment (rods, reels, waders, flies, etc.)
  • Fish processing

How is lodging handled and what are the room rates?

Room rates and booking options can be found on the booking page above.

Unlike many lodges in the area, King Salmon Lodge is extremely accessible.

Alaska Airlines offers twice-daily jet service from Anchorage directly into King Salmon. This provides several advantages:

  1. Jet aircraft (737s) are better equipped to operate in foggy conditions.
  2. We provide complimentary airport pickup, with a drive of less than five minutes to the lodge.
  3. No small planes are required unless you choose to charter one.

With two daily flights, scheduling your adventure is easy and flexible.

While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, we frequently see an incredible variety of species along the Naknek River and within Katmai National Park & Preserve, including:

Bears, moose, caribou, lynx, wolves, foxes, beluga whales, otters, sea lions, mink, beavers, and a wide variety of migratory and predatory birds.

How far in advance should I book?

Although we have the largest lodge capacity in the Bristol Bay area (49 guests), we fill up quickly. We recommend booking several months in advance, though last-minute cancellations do occasionally occur.

If you plan to fish with a guide, we strongly encourage reserving early so we can ensure professional guide availability.

If you choose to take your fish home, your guide will fillet, vacuum-seal, and deep-freeze your salmon. The fillets are packed into a wax-sealed insulated box weighing 48 lbs (22 kg), which can be checked on your flight home.

We intentionally pack boxes under the airline weight limit to avoid additional fees. Fish will remain frozen for up to 24 hours.

Fish processing is included in your package. Additional boxes are available for a $45 fee, which covers packaging materials.

We also work with Alaska Seafood & Sausage in Anchorage. Your fillets can be shipped directly to them for further processing to your specifications and then shipped to your home.

Safety is our top priority at King Salmon Lodge. Occasionally, weather or conditions may create unsafe situations for guides or pilots, requiring changes to planned activities.

When this happens, KSL works closely with guests and partner agencies to ensure your experience remains safe, enjoyable, and memorable.

We provide:

  • Men’s, women’s, and youth waders and boots
  • All fishing gear and tackle
  • Rain jackets (just in case)

KSL also has a variety of shirts, hats and hoodies for sale in the office

We recommend bringing:

  • Layered clothing for changing weather
  • Comfortable shoes and socks
  • Rain gear
  • Polarized sunglasses and a   baseball hat
  • Sun and insect protection
  • Prescription medications
  • Cash for tips and lodge     merchandise

Alaska weather can change quickly—being prepared ensures you get the most out of your adventure.

FAQs About King Salmon Lodge

The best time to visit Alaska is during the summer months, from June through August. This is when you get long daylight hours, mild temperatures, and the most reliable conditions for fishing, wildlife viewing, and outdoor adventures. For anglers heading to King Salmon Lodge, June and July are especially popular for king salmon, while July and August bring incredible sockeye, trout, and other species. Summer gives you the perfect mix of comfortable weather and peak fishing opportunities.

We offer a variety of premium Alaskan wilderness experiences, including fully guided fishing trips on the Naknek River and fly-outs to nearby rivers, lakes, and streams. You can fish for king, sockeye, and silver salmon, trophy rainbow trout, arctic char, grayling, and northern pike. Guests also enjoy wildlife and bear-viewing tours near Katmai National Park and Preserve, as well as comfortable lodging, gourmet dining, and spaces for retreats or private groups.

The lodge is open from June 1 to October 1, with peak fishing season running from June 21 through August 31. Trout season begins June 8, king salmon runs from June 24 to July 31, and sockeye season runs from June 25 to July 15. Late summer brings silver salmon and freshwater species in August and early September, followed by rainbow fly-fishing through September.

Guests often see brown bears, beluga whales, moose, lynx, otters, foxes, bald eagles, arctic hares, and a wide range of migratory birds—many visible right from the lodge grounds or along nearby rivers.

Room rates vary depending on season and room type. Breakfast is included for all guests, and lunch or dinner can be added for an additional nightly fee. Also a 10 percent bed tax applies to all rooms.

Getting to King Salmon is simple. You fly from Anchorage directly into King Salmon Airport (AKN). The flight takes about an hour. Once you land, the King Salmon Lodge team will pick you up and bring you straight to the property. There are no roads connecting King Salmon to the rest of Alaska, so flying is the only way in and out. Most guests book a round trip from Anchorage with Alaska Airlines or Ravn.

FAQs About Bear Viewing in Alaska

Safety is our primary focus. In Katmai and surrounding areas, we utilize elevated viewing platforms and follow strict park ranger and guide protocols. While bears may naturally wander near trails, we maintain a respectful distance that keeps both the guests and the bears safe, allowing for incredible photography without disturbing their natural behavior.

July is the "peak" for seeing bears at Brooks Falls catching salmon. However, September is also spectacular as the bears return to the lower rivers to feed on "spawned-out" salmon to pack on final weight before hibernation. Both months offer unique behaviors and different lighting for photographers.

We recommend dressing in layers and bringing high-quality rain gear, as Alaskan weather changes quickly. Sturdy walking boots or shoes are a must. We provide the bush plane transport and expert guiding; you just need your camera, plenty of memory cards, and a sense of adventure!

While there are many spots in Alaska, King Salmon Lodge is uniquely positioned near the world-famous Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. This is the iconic location where you can view massive brown bears standing atop waterfalls catching leaping Sockeye salmon. We also offer fly-outs to other remote, less-crowded river systems depending on the time of the season and salmon run density.

Yes, but few offer the "best of both worlds" like King Salmon Lodge. Many bear-viewing lodges are extremely remote and rustic; we provide a high-end, comfortable lodge experience with expert-guided daily excursions. You get to spend your day in the heart of bear country and your evenings enjoying gourmet meals and a comfortable bed right on the banks of the Naknek River.

It is the pulse of the Alaskan ecosystem. The annual return of millions of Sockeye salmon provides the essential calories brown bears need to survive the winter. Watching this connection in person isn't just a photo op, it’s witnessing a prehistoric cycle of survival. The salmon "run" dictates where the bears will be, and our guides are experts at timing your trip to match this peak activity.
