What to Pack for Your Alaska Adventure
Weather in Bristol Bay can change quickly, sometimes several times in the same day. Sunshine, wind, rain, and cool temperatures can all be part of the Alaska experience, so the key to packing for your stay at King Salmon Lodge is layers, waterproof outerwear, and comfortable footwear.
You do not need to bring your entire closet, but arriving with the right essentials will make your fishing, bear viewing, and time around the lodge much more comfortable.

Clothing & Layers
- Layers are your best friend in Alaska. Even during the summer, mornings and evenings can be chilly, while afternoons may warm up considerably.
-
We recommend bringing:
• Multiple lightweight and midweight upper-body layers
• Fleece, sweatshirt, or light insulated jacket
• Comfortable long-sleeve shirts
• Comfortable pants suitable for outdoor activities
• Warm socks and several extra pairs • A light waterproof rain jacket
• A warmer insulated waterproof jacket if you plan to fish
• Comfortable clothing that can be worn underneath fishing waders
• Casual, comfortable clothing for relaxing and dining at the lodge - For a day at Brooks Falls, we recommend always carrying a light rain jacket, regardless of the forecast. Bristol Bay weather can change quickly, and being prepared makes for a much more enjoyable day in Katmai.
Medications & Personal Items
- Please bring all prescription medications and personal medical necessities you may need for the entirety of your trip. King Salmon is a remote community, and access to specific medications, toiletries, and personal products is extremely limited.
-
We recommend packing your preferred:
• Prescription and over-the-counter medications
• Toiletries and personal-care products
• Sunscreen
• Insect repellent
• Sunglasses
• Chargers and personal electronics - King Salmon Lodge provides basic necessities for showering and hand washing, but if there is a particular brand or product you prefer, please bring it with you.
Fishing Essentials
- Because fishing conditions can range from cold rain to warm sunshine within a single outing, we recommend bringing both a warm, insulated waterproof jacket and a lightweight rain shell, along with several layers that can easily be added or removed throughout the day.
- Sunglasses are required while fishing for eye protection. Polarized sunglasses are strongly recommended, as they reduce glare and can dramatically improve your ability to see beneath the surface of the water.
- A hat or other form of head protection is also highly recommended for all anglers.
- We provide all rods and tackle, but if you want to bring your own gear, please do!
Bugs — Come Prepared!
- Mosquitoes, white socks, and no-see-ums are a very real part of summer in Bristol Bay.
- Insect repellent can certainly help, but we strongly recommend bringing or purchasing a bug net, particularly if you will be spending extended periods outdoors. Long-sleeve shirts and long pants also provide an important extra layer of protection.
- Bug nets and several other Alaska essentials are available for purchase in our lodge shop if you arrive without them.
Gratuity
- We recommend planning for gratuities before traveling to King Salmon, particularly because access to banking and cash services can be limited once you arrive.
- For guided fishing, bear viewing, photography, and other guided activities, 20% is our recommended industry-standard gratuity for excellent service.
- Our lodge staff operates on a shared tip-pool system. Creating a great stay in remote Alaska takes an entire team, and gratuities recognize the drivers, housekeepers, cooks, maintenance crew, and other lodge staff working together behind the scenes and throughout your visit.
- Restaurant gratuities are all put into the lodge tip pool, additional opportunities upon check out are available to thank our staff with additional gratuity
- Cash is always preferred for gratuities, particularly for guides, but we are happy to accommodate gratuities by credit card when needed.
Footwear
- Bring sturdy, comfortable footwear suitable for gravel roads, dirt trails, boardwalks, and uneven terrain. Waterproof or water-resistant footwear is always a good choice.
- If you are fishing with King Salmon Lodge, we provide waders and wading boots, so you do not need to pack your own unless you prefer to use personal gear.
A Few Final Packing Tips
- Alaska rewards guests who come prepared rather than those who try to predict the weather. Pack clothing that can be layered, expect that something may get wet or muddy, and prioritize comfort and function over dressing up.
- Most importantly, do not underestimate rain gear, good footwear, sunglasses, or bug protection. Having those four things with you can make the difference between simply enduring Alaska's unpredictable conditions and thoroughly enjoying them.
- Pack smart, bring a few extra layers, and we'll help take care of the rest once you arrive in King Salmon. A local grocery store is available for last minute needs, but please note they are limited on selection and availability.

We had an amazing stay at KSL. The staff went above and beyond our expectations in helping us experience Katmai National Park at its best. Rooms in the lodge are clean and comfortable. It was a delight to eat meals prepared by chef Bryon who is extremely talented.Posted on Google![]()

A little disorganized, meals are at their restaurant where a meal is served, no choices, no schedule for what is served. Drinks while staying at the lodge are not easy to get. No in room fridge for your own sodas. Dinner the food was excellent. Service for dining needs improvement. Guides were knowledgeable about sockeye but not Kings. They forgot one of my fish boxes going to the airport. Recommend going to Brooks Falls, expensive but worth it. Need to improve on service. They really need hiking or side trips.Posted on Google![]()

The service was amazing. Everyone was friendly with a positive attitude. Steak night is amazing. Cooked perfectly with amazing flavor. Breakfast is just as good, and the employees do everything possible to make your stay perfect. There's a lot of improvements going on. Wifi in the cabins can be tricky to get right now. They don't have cheap towels. They are the good ones you would use at home. Bed was comfortable. Nice quiet area on the river. Thanks to everyone here for a great stay.Posted on Google![]()
